Crisis in the Kasai Oriental Provincial Assembly: the President under fire from critics

In a letter published on Monday, July 10, a dozen provincial deputies from Kasaï Oriental withdrew their confidence in the President of the Assembly, Anthanase Kabongo Malembongo. They accuse him of “notorious incompetence” in the exercise of his functions as well as several serious breaches.

The provincial deputies denounce in particular the poor functioning of the administration of the Assembly, with recruitment of personnel in violation of the texts in force. They also accuse the President of embezzlement and irregular allocations of the emoluments of provincial deputies and funds intended for the staff of the deliberative body.

The letter also highlights the non-respect of the rights of deputies as well as the lack of consideration for them on the part of President Kabongo Malembongo. The signatories demand his removal from the office of the Provincial Assembly, the establishment of a commission responsible for noting his serious faults and his replacement, as well as the convening of an extraordinary session to examine the pending matters. .

This crisis within the Kasai Oriental Provincial Assembly adds to the political tensions already present in the region. While the population was waiting for concrete actions from its elected officials to improve the socio-economic situation, this crisis risks causing a delay in the processing of important files and further weakening the institutional functioning of the province.

It now remains to be seen how this crisis will be managed and whether solutions will be found to restore confidence between the provincial deputies and their President. In the meantime, the political situation in Kasaï Oriental remains tense and the future of the province is uncertain
