In a context where freedom of expression and democratic space are more than ever under threat, it is essential to highlight the actions that seek to restrict these fundamental rights. It is in this perspective that the citizen movement LUCHA draws attention to the alarming situation in the province of Kasaï-Central.
According to the LUCHA statement, since the arrival of Governor John Kabeya Shikeyi as head of the province, a series of acts of political intolerance and violence have been observed. Acts of vandalism, physical attacks, torture, intimidation, arbitrary arrests and even programs inciting hatred have become commonplace in the region.
LUCHA particularly denounces a group of activists affiliated with a well-identified political party, the UDPS, and its allies, as being responsible for these repressive acts. Such an attack on democracy is unacceptable for LUCHA, which has devoted its efforts to establishing the rule of law in the region.
Faced with this critical situation, LUCHA calls on John Kabeya to strictly respect democratic standards and asks the Minister of the Interior to transfer the commander of the Congolese national police, Colonel John Mbela, for his inability to guarantee security and his complicity alleged in this case.
LUCHA also warns against the authorities’ inaction and announces far-reaching actions if its recommendations are not taken into account. It remains determined to fight for the protection of fundamental rights and for the preservation of democratic space in the province of Kasaï-Central.
This situation denounced by LUCHA is unfortunately not an isolated case. Many citizen movements and human rights organizations around the world face obstacles to their action, attacks and violence aimed at silencing them. It is therefore crucial to support these movements in their struggle to preserve democracy and individual freedoms.
As committed citizens, it is our responsibility to remain vigilant and to denounce any attack on democracy wherever it occurs. Freedom of expression and the protection of human rights are essential pillars of any democratic society, and we must work tirelessly to preserve them
