In South Kivu, the aftermath of torrential rains continues to claim victims. The villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi were particularly affected by these floods leaving behind an increasing number of deaths and missing. In a report presented by the government spokesperson during a weekly briefing, the number of victims reached 401 dead, including bodies found but also missing and missing persons. The authorities went to the scene to take care of the survivors and organize funerals for some of the victims. However, several other bodies were buried in mass graves, for lack of identification or response from certain families.
If the authorities have promised to provide financial assistance but also in terms of food and medicine, civil society, for its part, speaks of more than 4,300 people missing after the floods. More than 500 families also learned of the disappearance of some of their relatives while they were away from the Nyamukubi market. The authorities have thus decreed a national mourning and organized a mass for the victims in memory of the deceased. Rescuers continue to search for survivors and provide care to the injured in nearby hospitals. The toll is therefore likely to increase in the days to come as populations are already suffering from this natural disaster.
