“Critical dialogue for credible elections in the DRC: Call for harmonization of the electoral process and transparency”

The dialogue between stakeholders to harmonize the electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is in the news. Congolese opponents such as Moïse Katumbi, Delly Sesanga and Augustin Matata have called for the establishment of a real consultation framework to ensure the credibility of the next elections.

In a memorandum, they stress the importance of shedding light on information concerning a possible prior distribution of quotas between the authorities of the Sacred Union, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and other figures in power . They are also asking for a revision of the electoral law, in particular with regard to the voting method and the publication of the partial voting results by polling station.

Opponents also want to know the number of machines delivered by Miru Systems and their deployment in registration centers, as well as the mapping of all operational areas. They also denounce the instrumentalization of political, judicial and fiscal institutions against opposition candidates, and oppose the arbitrary arrests and detentions of their collaborators.

Opposition leaders are also calling for an end to the intimidation and arrests of journalists from a political camp as well as restrictions on the freedom of movement of candidates during the next elections. Martin Fayulu, although a signatory of the Lubumbashi declaration, was not associated with this memorandum.

It is essential to stress the importance of this dialogue to guarantee credible elections in the DRC. By allowing real consultation between all the stakeholders, it is possible to remove ambiguities and restore confidence in the electoral process. The transparency and fairness of elections are crucial elements to ensure the stability and democratic development of the country.

It is now essential that the Congolese authorities heed this call for constructive dialogue and put in place the necessary measures to ensure fair and transparent elections. The participation of all political actors and the consideration of the concerns of the opposition are key elements to guarantee the smooth running of the electoral process in the DRC.
