“Strengthening the civic engagement of young people for participatory democracy in the DRC”

Title: Civic and electoral education of young people to guarantee participatory democracy in the DRC

Introduction: The official launch ceremony of the civic and electoral education program in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) brought together many personalities and partners committed to promoting youth engagement in the electoral process. Organized by the United States Embassy in the DRC, this initiative aims to raise awareness among young people of the importance of their political participation and to strengthen their confidence in the electoral system.

A commitment to participatory democracy: US Ambassador Lucy Tamlyn presented the project aimed at mobilizing young people in more than 12 regions of the DRC and facilitating their full involvement in the decision-making process . Highlighting the low participation rate of young people in previous elections, she recalled the importance of their voice in building a more prosperous future for the Congolese people.

Presentation of certificates to facilitators: During the ceremony, certificates were presented to the program facilitators, some of whom are students of the Protestant University of Congo. These facilitators will be responsible for transmitting the knowledge acquired during their training to the other young participants. The objective is to train responsible citizens, capable of understanding the Congolese electoral system and making informed decisions during elections.

A non-partisan program: It is important to emphasize that this civic and electoral education program does not favor any political candidate. Its goal is to equip young people with citizenship and encourage them to exercise their right to vote in an informed manner. This is a neutral approach, aimed at strengthening participatory democracy and promoting the civic engagement of young people.

Conclusion: The DRC faces a major challenge in terms of political participation of young people. The civic and electoral education program constitutes an important step in raising awareness among young Congolese of their role as active and responsible citizens. By strengthening their confidence in the electoral system and encouraging them to get involved in the decision-making process, this initiative helps to guarantee a more participatory democracy in the DRC.
