Scrabble news: the K. Fokam 2023 international tournament won by the Congolese Ibn Ngumba

Organized by the Professional Francophone Scrabble League, the K. Fokam 2023 international tournament was held from July 2 to 8 in Kribi, Cameroon. It saw the participation of eight African countries, including Cameroon, Benin, Ivory Coast, Niger, DRC, Chad, Gabon and Togo. This scrabble competition, dubbed “the K Fokam Millionaire Tournament”, has caught the attention of fans of this word game.

Of the forty-nine athletes registered, it was the Congolese Ibn Ngumba who brilliantly won the title of African champion. After the group stages, where each player was grouped into a group of six, Ibn Ngumba managed to qualify for the final by eliminating his opponents one after the other. Proud to represent the DRC, he expressed his satisfaction at having raised the Congolese flag to the highest level.

Ibn Ngumba’s journey has not been easy, especially with regard to travel conditions to Kribi. Due to a lack of financial means, he and his companion had to make a long journey by bus from the Republic of Congo to the Cameroonian border, notably crossing the Congo River. Despite these difficulties, their determination to represent their country pushed them to take all the risks.

This international Scrabble tournament was made possible thanks to the initiative of Daniel Essomba, nicknamed “Master Gitan”, a talented Scrabble player and member of the STC Club of Yaoundé. With the support of Dr. Paul Kammogne Fokam, the main sponsor of the event, Daniel Essomba succeeded in realizing his project to set up an innovative Scrabble tournament and to promote professional Scrabble in Cameroon.

This victory of Ibn Ngumba at the K. Fokam 2023 tournament marks a turning point in the world of Scrabble in Africa. She stresses the importance of supporting and promoting mind games, as well as the talents and skills of Scrabble players in the region. Scrabble, as a game that stimulates the mind and develops language skills, deserves to be highlighted and encouraged.
