Title: The SADC pre-electoral mission in the DRC confident about the electoral process
Introduction :
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Advisory Council Pre-Electoral Assessment Mission recently visited the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to assess the level of preparedness of the electoral process ahead of the elections in December 2023. After meeting with political actors and stakeholders, the SADC delegation declared itself satisfied with the progress made and confident about the holding of free and transparent elections in the country.
A well-prepared electoral process:
During various meetings with the Congolese authorities, civil society, political parties and the press, the SADC delegation was able to see the efforts made to prepare for the elections of December 2023. It congratulated the president of the Independent National Electoral Commission ( CENI), Denis Kadima, for having taken into account the concerns expressed by the different parties and for having ensured the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
The SADC Vice-President, representing Namibia and head of the delegation, Notemba Tjipuela, highlighted the importance of the pre-electoral assessment and expressed satisfaction with the evolution of the electoral process in the DRC. She said the delegation looked forward to returning during the elections to observe the voting process.
Preparations underway:
The Congolese authorities reassured the SADC delegation of their determination to organize the elections on schedule. After the voter identification and registration operation, as well as the audit of the electoral file, the CENI has already received the applications at all levels of the elections. The election campaign is scheduled to begin in a month.
Election observation perspectives:
The SADC delegation expressed its commitment to accompany the DRC during the December 2023 elections as an observation mission. She stressed the importance of independent and impartial observation in order to ensure the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
