“End of the race: when the caricature reveals the ills of Congolese society”

Launch of the collection of caricatures “Fin de course”: when art denounces current events

The National Museum of the DRC was the scene of a significant event this Friday, October 15, 2023. The Congolese cartoonist, caricaturist and illustrator Thembo Muhindo Kashauri, better known as “KASH”, presented his latest collection of caricatures entitled “End of race”. This work, which brings together his political drawings, testifies to his talent and his commitment to denouncing the failings of Congolese society.

In this fourth album, KASH addresses many themes such as the death of Étienne Tshisekedi, insecurity in the East and the reign of Joseph Kabila. Through his drawings, he takes a sharp look at current political events and highlights the abuses and weaknesses of political actors. For him, caricature is a means of political communication, but also a way of expressing the anxieties and concerns of the author in the face of a sometimes discouraging reality.

By analyzing KASH’s work, Professor Hilaire Mbiye highlights the social and communicative dimension of his drawings. By using humor and satire, the artist manages to express the dissatisfaction of a suffering people, while denouncing the dehumanization of the Congolese. His collection presents itself as a historical chronicle of the political events which marked the DRC between 2012 and 2018, thus offering a retrospective look at the history of the country.

This launch was also an opportunity to award the prizes for the “Draw Me Peace” competition, highlighting artists committed to promoting peace and tolerance.

KASH, pioneer of caricature in the DRC, enjoys both national and international fame. In addition to his drawing skills, he is also an advertising designer and has exhibited his works across many countries.

He is therefore a complete and committed artist who continues to leave his mark on the world of caricature in the Democratic Republic of Congo. With “End of race”, it offers readers a new opportunity to reflect on current events and become aware of the political issues in their country.
