In the Comoros, a new wind of hope is blowing on the political scene. This Saturday, opposition parties formed a coalition called “Twamaya yahe Komori” (hope for the Comoros). Currently bringing together five political parties, this coalition demonstrates the desire of Comorian political actors to come together for the next elections.
The signing of a charter of conduct marks the official launch of this coalition. Made up of more than ten resolutions, this charter aims to guarantee free and secure elections in the Comoros. Among the coalition’s demands, we find the suspension of measures deemed discriminatory, such as sponsorship, the ban on dual nationals from running for president or the obligation to stay in the Comoros for a year to be able to run.
This coalition does not advocate a single candidacy for the presidential election or the island governor elections, but it underlines the importance of a common approach and solidarity between members. Thus, the charter specifies that the candidate qualified in the second round must be supported by the other members of the coalition, subject to the prior development of a common minimum program. This approach aims to avoid the divisions and mistakes of the past, notably during the previous elections in 2019.
This is an important step for the Comorian opposition, which seeks to unify its forces and present a united front against the ruling party. By coming together, these political parties hope to strengthen their political weight, offer a credible alternative to voters and thus increase their chances of winning the elections.
The next presidential elections in Comoros are scheduled for January 2024, with a possible runoff in February of the same year. Until then, the Twamaya yahe Komori coalition will work to consolidate its ranks, develop a common agenda and mobilize support from voters across the country.
This coalition initiative demonstrates that Comorian politics is constantly evolving and that political actors are ready to take bold steps to move their country forward. Let us hope that this political union brings democratic renewal to the Comoros and paves the way for transparent, fair and representative elections.
