“The traditional chiefs of Djugu are launching an awareness campaign among the militiamen to promote peace and reconciliation”

Traditional authorities in the territory of Djugu, in Ituri province, recently launched an awareness campaign among militiamen operating in the region. For two days, on October 11 and 12, customary chiefs went to the villages of Mbau and Kobu, located more than 40 kilometers north of Bunia, to convey their message of cessation of hostilities and integration into the process of peace.

The objective of this campaign was to remind the militiamen of the importance of respecting the commitment they had made last June in Aru, where they pledged to definitively end hostilities. The traditional leaders also called on the militiamen to lay down their arms and wait for the effective implementation of the Demobilization, Disarmament, Reintegration and Community and Social Reintegration Program (PDDRCS). They stressed that this approach would contribute to restoring state authority in the territory of Djugu.

At the same time, residents were encouraged to support the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) in their efforts to restore security in the region. The traditional leaders also pleaded in favor of peaceful cohabitation between the different local communities, with the aim of promoting reconciliation and stability.

This first phase of awareness-raising took place successfully in Mbau and Kobu, and the traditional leaders now plan to extend their campaign to other villages in the Djugu territory. The next stages will include the localities of Ngbasiba, Goba Njauda, Tsoro, Bambou, Lipri and Ngangaray.

The ultimate objective of this campaign is to achieve a lasting calm in the region, which would promote the return of displaced populations, the relaunch of agricultural and economic activities, and the reconstruction of community life undermined by persistent insecurity. since 2017.

By raising awareness among the militia and encouraging reconciliation, the traditional authorities of the Djugu territory play an essential role in consolidating peace and promoting a climate of stability. This initiative marks an important step towards resolving tensions and building a peaceful future for the population of the Ituri region.
