The UN takes “strong measures” against MONUSCO soldiers in the DRC
The UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) recently announced that it had taken “strong measures” against certain peacekeepers deployed in the country. These measures follow “serious misconduct” committed by members of the operation.
According to internal MONUSCO documents obtained by AFP, eight soldiers were arrested and one officer was suspended in connection with a sexual exploitation case. The facts date back to September 30, 2023 in Beni, where several South African MONUSCO soldiers left the Mavivi camp despite the curfew to go to a brothel in the city.
These soldiers were discovered by members of the Monusco police later in the evening. Some managed to escape, while others were caught and arrested outside the base. Following the incident, an officer was suspended for intimidating and verbally threatening UN members after the soldiers’ arrest.
It should be noted that MONUSCO had already taken measures in the past to put an end to the frequentation of brothels by soldiers of the UN contingents, particularly in Beni. However, despite these actions, these problems appear to persist.
This case highlights the need for greater accountability of peacekeepers and the prevention of sexual exploitation in peacekeeping operations.
