Martin Fayulu: The joint opposition candidate for the December 2023 presidential election
In a recent statement to the press, Martin Fayulu, who came second in the 2018 presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), claimed to be the only common opposition candidate for the presidential election in December 2023. According to him, his ethical and moral probity distinguishes him from other contenders.
Martin Fayulu also took a position in favor of Doctor Denis Mukwege, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018, who is also a presidential candidate. This position comes in a context marked by criticism against Denis Mukwege, particularly on his vision of the integration of the notion of gender in the DRC.
The candidate from the Commitment to Citizenship and Development (ECiDé) claims to be the only one to possess the necessary professional and competent qualities. He claims a mastery of political, security, economic and social issues greater than that of any other candidate.
Regarding the financing of his electoral campaign, Martin Fayulu affirms that it will be supported by the Congolese people, like Donald Trump’s campaign in the United States. He even launched a fundraiser among his supporters, offering a contribution of 1 dollar or 2,500 Congolese francs.
These statements come a few days after Seth Kikuni’s call for a common opposition candidate. Martin Fayulu therefore seems to have positioned himself as the candidate who embodies this much sought-after unity within the Congolese opposition.
It remains to be seen how this statement will be received by other opposition candidates and by public opinion. In any case, Martin Fayulu says he is ready to bring together and discuss with the other candidates to build a real alternative to the presidency in the DRC.
This statement from Martin Fayulu sheds new light on the presidential race in the DRC. His positioning as a joint opposition candidate is a point to follow closely in the months to come.
