Escalating tensions between DRC and Rwanda threaten stability in East Africa

Instability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continues to ripple, with President Félix Tshisekedi once again blaming Rwanda for the situation. During a joint press conference with the South African president, Tshisekedi claimed that Rwanda had always lied about its involvement in the conflicts in the greater Kivu region.

According to Tshisekedi, Rwanda still denies its aggression against the DRC and presents the situation as an internal Congolese problem, with armed groups like the M23 being presented as Congolese taking up arms against their own country. However, Tshisekedi claims that these allegations are false and that Rwanda continues to attack the DRC despite the overwhelming evidence.

The Congolese president does not seem to rule out the possibility of negotiating with Rwanda, but he believes that the current situation does not allow such discussions. He also regrets the behavior of the East African regional force, criticizing its failure to respect peace agreements and treaties. Tshisekedi, however, claims not to reject this force, but rather its behavior and hopes that new arrangements can be made by September.

This statement by Tshisekedi highlights the continuing tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, with recurring accusations of aggression and support for armed groups. Stability in eastern DRC remains a major security and humanitarian challenge, and concerted efforts by the countries of the region are needed to find a lasting solution to this conflict
