“The Rwandan military presence in eastern DRC: the EU strongly condemns and calls for the immediate withdrawal of troops”

The Rwandan military presence in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to provoke strong reactions within the international community. The European Union recently issued a statement strongly condemning Rwanda’s support for the Tutsi M23 rebellion and demanding the immediate withdrawal of Rwandan troops from the region.

This EU condemnation follows reports by the UN group of experts which confirmed Rwanda’s support for the M23 and its military presence in eastern DRC. The M23 rebellion has caused countless deadly attacks on civilians and taken control of vast territories in North Kivu.

The EU says Rwanda must use all the means at its disposal to put pressure on the group and compel it to respect the decisions taken within the framework of the Nairobi and Luanda processes. It also calls on the DRC to cease its support and cooperation with various local and foreign armed groups, such as the FDLR, and to take all necessary measures to protect the civilian population on its territory.

This EU statement highlights the continuing tensions and security challenges facing eastern DRC. The situation in the region is worrying, with increasing violence and urgent humanitarian needs. It is crucial that diplomatic and political measures are taken to resolve the crisis and ensure the stability of the region.

Mediation and dialogue efforts between stakeholders, as well as the involvement of the international community, are essential to achieve a peaceful resolution to this conflict. It is also essential that those responsible for serious human rights violations and war crimes be held accountable for their actions in order to ensure justice for the victims.

As the EU continues to condemn Rwanda’s support for the M23, it is essential that international pressure continues to end this military presence and promote peace in eastern DRC
