“Violence in Kitshanga, North Kivu: the M23 rekindles the clashes, the population in danger”

Kitshanga, a city in North Kivu, is once again the scene of violence and clashes. Shots were heard in the region, causing panic among the population. The M23 rebels appear to be behind this new offensive aimed at reoccupying the city.

The residents of Kitshanga had to flee their homes, taking refuge either at the MONUSCO peacekeeper base there, or by taking the road towards Mwesso. The situation is therefore very precarious and residents live in fear of an escalation of violence.

But Kitshanga is not the only conflict front. Clashes were also reported on the Kibumba axis, between local armed groups called “Wazalendo” and M23 rebels. Despite the presence of the regional force which tries to maintain calm, the situation remains very volatile.

The Congolese army, the FARDC, claims to be observing the ceasefire for the moment, but condemns the actions of the M23, which it describes as a “flagrant violation”. If the provocations persist, the army says it is ready to retaliate and do battle with the rebels.

In this region already marked by clashes and violence, it is crucial to find a peaceful solution to ensure the safety of residents. The international community must also support efforts to stabilize the region in order to avoid an escalation of conflicts.

It is important to stay informed of the evolving situation in Kitshanga and the North Kivu region. Political actors and the civilian population must work together to find lasting solutions and put an end to the cycles of violence that have ravaged the region for too long. It is essential to ensure peace and stability to allow populations to live in security and rebuild their lives.
