“How to preserve your mental health to promote peace: MONUSCO organizes awareness activities in Beni-Lubero”

Mental health is an often overlooked topic, but it is increasingly recognized as an essential part of our overall well-being. As peacemakers, it is crucial that we maintain optimal mental health to be able to promote peace in our environment.

It is in this context that the interim head of office of MONUSCO Beni-Lubero, Abdourahamane Ganda, launched the activities of the month dedicated to mental health. According to him, being at peace with oneself is a necessary precondition for being able to deliver peace to others.

Initially planned for October 10, International Mental Health Day, the activities were brought forward to the previous Saturday to allow everyone to fully benefit from this day dedicated to mental health.

The MONUSCO/Beni welfare committee organized various activities to raise awareness among United Nations staff as well as the various youth and women’s structures in the city of Beni. Among these activities, a health march was organized, starting from the military camp of the Kenyan contingent. This 7 kilometer walk aimed to raise awareness of mental health, identifying individual, social and structural factors that can affect our mental well-being. The aim was to reduce risks, build resilience and create environments supportive of mental health.

MONUSCO psychologist in Beni, Edwige Emilie Kouamen, stressed the importance of taking care of one’s mental health and not hesitating to talk about it with trusted colleagues or mental health professionals. She encouraged not to be alone and not to be afraid to ask for help.

Participants in this walk testified to the relaxation and joy they felt throughout the activity. For Henriette Kahindo, athlete and participant, this walk allowed her to forget certain personal problems and feel relieved mentally.

In addition to the walk, other activities such as football and volleyball matches were organized to involve staff in raising awareness about mental health.

Mental health awareness and awareness are crucial steps in promoting mental well-being in our society. By taking care of our mental health, we can not only improve our own quality of life, but also help create an environment where everyone can reach their full potential.
