The challenges of Rome’s bid to host the 2030 Universal Expo

The city of Rome, in Italy, is positioning itself as a candidate to host the Universal Exhibition of the year 2030. This candidacy arouses great interest and is the subject of an active promotion campaign. As part of this campaign, a special ambassador from the RomeExpo2030 bid committee traveled to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, to present this bid to Congolese authorities and civil society representatives.

This application aims to propose a new model of universal exhibition, focused on collaboration and partnership between participating countries. The special ambassador, Fabio Nicolucci, emphasizes the importance of establishing a special partnership with the DRC, which would continue even after the exhibition. He raises the possibility of having a permanent pavilion in Rome, symbolizing the continuity of collaboration between the countries.

The special ambassador says he is impressed by Congolese youth and sees significant potential in them. He is convinced that participation in the Universal Exhibition would be an opportunity for this dynamic youth to make their voice heard and contribute to the economic, social and cultural growth of the country.

Rome’s candidacy proposes the theme “People and Territories: Regeneration, Inclusion and Innovation”. This theme emphasizes the need to find innovative and inclusive solutions to meet the challenges of the future. It demonstrates Rome’s desire to promote urban regeneration, social inclusion and sustainable development.

This application is not the only one on the list. Three other countries have also submitted their bids to host the 2030 World Expo. Saudi Arabia is proposing the city of Riyadh with the theme “The Age of Change: Together for a Bright Future”. Ukraine is banking on the city of Odessa with the theme “Renaissance. Technology. Future”. South Korea chose the city of Busan with the theme “Transforming our world, Navigating towards a better future.”

Before the 2030 World Expo, which would be held from May 1 to October 31, another exhibition is planned in 2025 in Osaka Kansai, Japan. This series of international exhibitions provides a platform to discuss global issues and foster the exchange of ideas and knowledge between participating countries.

Rome’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo represents a unique opportunity for the city and for Italy to showcase their cultural heritage, their know-how and their capacity for innovation. But beyond the event itself, this candidacy opens the way to lasting international collaboration and the search for common solutions to build a better future..
