Symposium on localization in the DRC: Local actors take the reins of the humanitarian response
From October 2 to 3, a national symposium on localization in humanitarian response was held in Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Participants praised the importance of giving local actors a leading role in responding to humanitarian crises in the DRC.
Under the theme “From Istanbul to Bukavu, from theory to action”, this event aimed to promote a better understanding of the location of humanitarian aid and to define an approach adapted to the Congolese reality.
The president of the platform of national organizations, DeJoseph Kakisingi, explained the objective of this initiative: “In the DRC, local and national humanitarian actors have acquired great experience in taking charge of humanitarian responses. It was necessary to organize this symposium to discuss the most effective ways for aid to come primarily from local actors, who must play a key role in these situations.”
The speakers also highlighted the importance of involving women’s organizations in the humanitarian response. They proposed to allocate a specific share of funding to women’s organizations, while evaluating their effectiveness on the ground.
This symposium was inspired by the Istanbul summit held in 2016. It highlighted the need to rethink the humanitarian system, making it more responsive and promoting greater participation of local actors to responses adapted to the needs of communities.
By encouraging local actors to play a leading role in the humanitarian response in the DRC, this symposium paves the way for a more concerted and effective approach to addressing crises and the needs of populations in the country. The localization of humanitarian aid thus becomes a major issue to ensure rapid and adapted responses to emergency situations in the DRC.
