The second phase of the polio vaccination campaign was officially launched by the Ministry of Health in Kinshasa. This campaign aims to protect more than 2.5 million children under the age of 5 in the Congolese capital.
Poliomyelitis, also called buka buka locally, is a highly contagious disease that causes sudden paralysis of one or more of the child’s limbs. It mainly affects unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children. Vaccination remains the safest and most effective way to prevent this disease and ensure a better future for our children.
Since the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, great progress has been made. Wild poliovirus cases have been reduced by 99% thanks to vaccination. However, the DRC remains one of the African countries most affected by polio, with more than 800 reported cases of types 1 and 2 polio.
It is therefore essential for the global community to reverse this trend and protect children from this and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
The second phase of the polio vaccination campaign will take place from September 28 to 30 in the 24 municipalities of the capital. The goal is to reach as many children as possible and ensure they are protected against this devastating disease.
In conclusion, vaccination remains the key to eliminating polio and preventing other preventable diseases. It is important for every individual and community to support these vaccination efforts and protect the health of children. Together, we can make the world safer and healthier for future generations.
