Title: Members of the Twirwaneho armed group surrender to the Congolese armed forces

Introduction :

During the month of September, positive news came to light in the news in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Indeed, 12 members of the Twirwaneho armed group surrendered to the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in Minembwe, a locality located in the Fizi highlands. This surrender is the result of awareness efforts deployed by General Ehonza André Uketi, commander of the Twelfth Rapid Reaction Brigade based in Minembwe, in the highlands region.

The surrender of the members of Twirwaneho:

According to information provided by military sources from the 12th Rapid Reaction Brigade, among the members of the armed group who surrendered were two minors who served as bodyguards to deserter Colonel Charles Sematama. These minors were handed over to MONUSCO to be placed under child protection, while the other 10 members surrendered to the FARDC and were transferred to the 10th military region based in Bukavu.

Among the Twirwaneho members who surrendered, there were seven minors and five adults. This surrender allowed the recovery of five AK-47 type weapons as well as 143 ammunition. It should be noted that the members of the armed group made this decision due to the poor precarious living conditions and the mistreatment inflicted by the warlords towards their subordinates.

A glimmer of hope in a region plagued by instability:

This surrender is a glimmer of hope in a region marked by instability and armed conflict. It testifies to the efforts made by the Congolese government and security forces to bring peace and security to the high plateaux region. Authorities continue to work through outreach and persuasion to encourage other members of armed groups to lay down their weapons and surrender.

Conclusion :

The surrender of members of the Twirwaneho armed group is a significant step forward in efforts to pacify the highlands region in the DRC. It also testifies to the efforts made by the security forces to guarantee the protection of civilians and bring peace to the region. It is essential to continue these awareness-raising and persuasion actions in order to put an end to armed groups and allow the population to live in a safe and stable environment.
