“Partnership between the World Bank and the DRC: the crucial issue for the development of the country and the challenges of protecting the Virunga Park”

The news in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) currently revolves around the partnership between the country and the World Bank. A delegation from this institution met with the Head of State to discuss the progress of the various projects implemented under the new country partnership framework from 2022 to 2026. This instrument aims to support the strategic priorities of the Congolese government and important governance reforms.

However, the DRC must face a situation of insecurity resulting from armed conflicts and Rwandan aggression via the M23. Initiatives for the stabilization and development of the country are therefore necessary.

Furthermore, the Head of State also met the administrators of the Virunga and Garamba Parks. Their visit aimed to discuss the problems of insecurity they face following attacks by armed groups. The eco-guards are in danger and the death of more than 200 of them has been reported. However, initiatives have been taken to guarantee their security in collaboration with the FARDC.

The Virunga Park is very rich and presents an incredible diversity of habitats. Unfortunately, he is the target of many armed groups. The eco-guards lead a relentless fight there for the protection of the fauna and flora as well as the surrounding communities.

In short, the partnership between the World Bank and the DRC is a major challenge for the development of the country. However, stability is necessary for the proper implementation of projects. The Virunga Park is also a source of wealth for the country, but its protection requires the establishment of reinforced security for eco-guards
