Clashes between the FARDC and Mobondo militia in Kwango province continue to cause considerable damage. The figures reported by the Kwango civil society consultation framework are alarming: nearly 8,000 displaced people, including more than 4,300 children, were identified after the clashes. Loss of life was also reported, with 17 injured and several dead.
The humanitarian situation in which these displaced people find themselves is a source of major concern. According to civil society, they are seriously lacking in humanitarian aid, both from the central government and the provincial government and humanitarian partners. These displaced people are in urgent need of shelter, food and support to rebuild their lives.
In their report submitted to the provincial government, civil society also raises cases of looting and destruction of villages, as well as serious violence, such as the assassination of a village chief. These incidents add to an already long list of tragedies in the region. Indeed, Kwango has been plunged into insecurity for several months, with numerous armed clashes and civilian victims.
It is crucial that the authorities take rapid and effective action to end this violence and ensure the protection of civilians. It is also essential that humanitarian actors step up their efforts to respond to the urgent needs of the displaced and provide them with the assistance they desperately need.
The international community must also mobilize and provide support to the DRC, helping to restore peace and contributing to the stabilization of the region. The situation in Kwango is a poignant reminder of the challenges facing the country and the importance of working together to find lasting solutions. It is time to end these forced displacements and allow people to return to their homes safely.
