Africa’s First Ladies for Gender Equality – United Nations General Assembly 2021
Each year, the United Nations General Assembly provides First Ladies from around the world with the opportunity to come together, discuss and exchange on issues of importance to the future of their respective countries. This year’s meeting of African First Ladies for Gender Equality was chaired by Monica Geingos, First Lady of Namibia, and Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, First Lady of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OPDAD) has reviewed the results of the unifying campaign for gender equality in Africa, launched in June during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of OPDAD in Kinshasa. The First Ladies discussed the actions undertaken in their respective countries to promote gender equality, particularly in the areas of education, maternal and child health, women’s economic empowerment, and the fight against violence. gender-based sexual relations and female leadership.
Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, vice-president of OPDAD, stressed the importance of not losing sight of commitments made to gender equality. She called on her colleagues to collectively take responsibility, because future generations will judge them on their actions.
A distinguished guest at this event was Jill Biden, First Lady of the United States of America. Her presence demonstrated her commitment alongside the First Ladies of Africa to fight against all forms of discrimination against women.
The unifying campaign for gender equality, which ended on September 14, was discussed in detail at this meeting in New York. New areas of work and future perspectives were considered during the discussions.
This campaign, which took place in several African countries, aims to promote the well-being of the continent by working for greater equality between the sexes. The First Ladies of Africa are resolutely committed to this noble cause, aware of the positive impact it can have on society and on future generations.
