“The recapture of Mushaki by the Congolese armed forces: a major victory in the fight against armed groups in the DRC”

“Recapture of Mushaki by the Congolese armed forces: a decisive turning point in the fight against armed groups”

In a significant event for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) managed to regain control of the town of Mushaki, located about forty kilometers from Goma, in the territory of Masisi. This operation was carried out with the support of the regional force of the East African Community (EAC), deployed in the region after the withdrawal of the M23 rebels.

This is a significant step forward for the FARDC, which had failed to retake an area under the control of the EAC regional force since November 2022. Major General Peter Chirimwami Nkuba, Interim Governor and Commander operations in North Kivu, underlined the importance of this victory and recalled the clear message from the Head of State: there will be no negotiations with the armed groups. Congolese who find themselves among the ranks of the enemy are invited to return and follow the disarmament and reintegration process (P-DDRC), while foreigners must return to their country of origin.

The population of Mushaki, who had been confronted with the occupation and abuses of the M23 rebels for almost a year, expressed their joy and also demanded the presence of the police to ensure their security. The recapture of Mushaki is one of the first steps towards the total liberation of areas still occupied by armed groups in the region.

However, it is important to note that the situation remains fragile and challenges remain. The reintegration of ex-combatants, the restoration of state authority and the consolidation of peace are crucial issues to ensure lasting stability in the region.

This victory testifies to the commitment and determination of the Congolese armed forces in the fight against armed groups and in the protection of civilian populations. It is also the result of regional cooperation and support from the EAC regional force. By continuing on this path, the DRC will gradually be able to regain the stability and peace which are essential to the socio-economic development of the country.

It is now up to the Congolese authorities to consolidate the achievements of this operation and to put in place the necessary measures to prevent any resurgence of armed groups. Securing liberated areas, protecting civilians and promoting community reconciliation are all challenges that require coordinated action and strong political will.

The recapture of Mushaki is an important step in the fight against armed groups in the DRC, but much remains to be done. The reconstruction of regions affected by the conflict, the reintegration of ex-combatants and the promotion of transparent and inclusive governance are all challenges that require long-term commitment from all stakeholders.

The DRC has shown its determination to put an end to the insecurity and violence which have hampered its development for too long. With the support of the international community, it can now hope for a more stable and prosperous future for its citizens.
