“Consultations of the Electoral Commission for the general elections in the DRC”
The Electoral Commission (Céni) recently organized a series of consultations with stakeholders in the electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This three-day initiative, which took place at the People’s Palace in Kinshasa, brought together various political actors, members of civil society, women’s and youth associations, as well as people living with disabilities.
The objective of these consultations was to provide stakeholders with maximum information and to discuss several topics related to the upcoming elections. Among the points discussed were the publication of electoral lists, the mapping of polling stations, the accreditations of witnesses, observers and journalists, as well as the voting and counting process, including the use of the voting machine.
By organizing these consultations, the CENI seeks to promote transparency and ensure broad participation of stakeholders involved in the electoral process. Other similar sessions are planned before the start of the electoral campaign, scheduled for November 19.
However, it should be noted that some parts of the opposition chose to boycott these consultations. Martin Fayulu’s party, for example, is asking for a new audit of the electoral register to be carried out before resuming part in the process. Likewise, the camp of former President Joseph Kabila has decided to boycott the next elections.
Another challenge facing the CENI is the underfunding of the electoral process. The President of the Commission, Denis Kadima, revealed that the institution continues its work through bank loans. However, this could potentially have an impact on the electoral calendar. It is important to note that the DRC has not requested financial assistance from international donors to support these elections.
In conclusion, the consultations of the Electoral Commission of the DRC made it possible to engage in a constructive dialogue with the stakeholders in the electoral process. Despite the challenges it faces, the CENI strives to guarantee transparency and participation of all in these crucial elections for the future of the country.
