In our connected world, news evolves at breakneck speed. Every day, new events occur, attracting the interest and attention of Internet users. Among the current topics that attract attention, international conflicts occupy an important place. One of these forgotten conflicts is the one that has been raging in Ethiopia for several years.
While numerous alarming reports indicate an upsurge in violence in the country, NGOs are mobilizing to ensure that the mandate of UN investigators is renewed. These investigators are considered the last independent mechanism documenting war crimes in Ethiopia.
The conflict in Ethiopia began in November 2020 when a war broke out between the Ethiopian army and the forces of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in the northern Tigray region. The conflict has since spread to other parts of Ethiopia, leading to an increase in human rights violations.
Despite the signing of a ceasefire in November 2021, the violence has not stopped. According to UN investigators, armed clashes have resumed with renewed intensity over the past year, with numerous massacres, rapes, forced displacements and arbitrary detentions. Eritrean forces and Amhara militias are particularly singled out for their abuses.
The UN investigators’ report also highlights the responsibility of the Ethiopian government, accused of not effectively investigating human rights violations. Despite the establishment of a national mechanism to combat impunity and the creation of a national dialogue commission, the security situation has not improved.
Faced with this worrying situation, NGOs are calling for the renewal of the mandate of UN investigators in order to be able to document war crimes in Ethiopia independently. These investigators play an essential role in the fight against impunity and the search for justice for victims.
It is important to remember that forgotten conflicts like the one in Ethiopia must not be relegated to the background. They represent major challenges in terms of human rights and regional stability. As global citizens, it is our duty to stay informed and support initiatives to end these conflicts and punish those responsible for war crimes.
As the news continues to keep us on our toes with new information every day, let’s not forget to keep a close eye on the forgotten conflicts that require our solidarity and action.
