“Prison reform in the DRC: Kananga inmates trained for successful socio-professional reintegration”

Socio-professional training for inmates at Kananga central prison: a step towards rehabilitation and reintegration

Reform of the prison system is a crucial issue for many countries around the world. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the governor of the Kasai-Central province, John Kabeya Shikayi, recently took an important step in this direction by receiving a large batch of agricultural materials and inputs intended for the socio-professional training of inmates at the central prison. from Kananga.

This project, the result of a partnership between the governorate of the province, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the human rights department, aims to improve detention conditions and promote rehabilitation of prisoners by providing them with vocational training opportunities.

Among the materials provided by the UNDP, there are carpentry tools, soap making, pastry making as well as plowing equipment for agriculture. This equipment will allow prisoners to develop skills in different areas and to train in professions which could facilitate their social reintegration once their sentence has been served.

This initiative is welcomed by Maître Alain Kateta, coordinator of the joint United Nations program to support justice reform. It highlights Governor John Kabeya Shikayi’s commitment to improving detention conditions and rehabilitating detainees.

The governor himself expresses his wish to see these materials and inputs used optimally for the benefit of the prisoners. He particularly emphasizes the importance of placing emphasis on agriculture and socio-professional training sectors, which can offer real employment and autonomy opportunities to incarcerated people.

The visit to the building which will host these training courses marks a concrete step in the implementation of this project. The governor is satisfied with this progress and hopes that this initiative will serve as a model for other prisons in the country.

The socio-professional training of prisoners is an essential aspect of the reform of the prison system. By providing incarcerated people with the opportunity to develop skills and train for careers, we give them a real chance to reintegrate into society and lead productive lives once their sentence is over.

This initiative by Governor John Kabeya Shikayi is an encouraging example of the commitment of the Congolese authorities to the rehabilitation of detainees. It deserves to be supported and promoted, in order to promote reintegration and contribute to the construction of a more just and equitable society for all.
