“Ballack Obame: the fight for democracy in Gabon and the consequences of his struggle”

The tumultuous journey of Ballack Obame, former Gabonese student leader, bears witness to the difficult living conditions and political repression under the regime of Ali Bongo Ondimba. Through his testimony, we discover this young man’s struggle to improve the study conditions of Gabonese students, and the consequences he suffered for daring to oppose the system in place.

Ballack Obame made great strides by winning the Omar Bongo University Students’ Mutual Union election, despite sabotage attempts by the authorities. However, his mandate was cut short and he was arrested, accused of not being in agreement with those in power.

Ballack Obame’s story plunges us into the harsh reality of political repression in Gabon. He describes the abuse he suffered during his detention, as well as his isolation in inhumane conditions in Annex 1, where he was locked up with rats as his only companions.

And it is in this difficult context that Ballack Obame was contacted by Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang, during the failed coup attempt of January 7, 2019. Without knowing him before, Ballack Obame was asked by this soldier to spread a message of change to the Gabonese people. Unfortunately, this coup attempt was quickly put down and Ballack Obame was once again arrested and convicted for his alleged involvement.

Today, with the arrival of General Oligui Nguema as president of the transition, some are calling for the release of Kelly Ondo Obiang. Ballack Obame is one of those people calling for the release of prisoners of conscience and justice for all those who have been victims of political repression.

Ballack Obame’s journey is emblematic of the struggle of young Gabonese people for democracy and social justice. His testimony reminds us of the importance of freedom of expression and respect for human rights in a fair society.

In conclusion, Ballack Obame’s courage and determination are an inspiring example for all those fighting for a better future in Gabon and around the world. The release of prisoners of conscience and the pursuit of justice are essential steps in building a more just and democratic society.
