MONUSCO takes action against hate speech in the DRC
The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has reaffirmed its support for the initiatives of the Congolese media in the fight against hate speech during the electoral period. During the presentation of the online news media charter against hate speech, Sakuya Oka, Director of the Strategic Communication and Public Information Division of MONUSCO, called on the Congolese media to make responsible choices to promote sustainable development and peace.
MONUSCO welcomes the involvement of professional Congolese media associations in the development and adoption of this charter. This initiative comes a few months before the elections and aims to prevent tensions and conflicts exacerbated by hate speech conveyed on digital platforms. Indeed, during previous electoral processes in the DRC, online media were often the scene of fake news, insults and discriminatory remarks, thus contributing to a climate of tension.
MONUSCO is working in collaboration with the UN Country Team in the DRC to implement the UN Hate Speech Strategy and Action Plan. This initiative aims to combat the rise of xenophobia, racism, intolerance and religious hatred, in order to promote social cohesion, peace and stability.
By supporting the action of the Congolese media, MONUSCO seeks to prevent conflicts and promote a climate of dialogue and mutual understanding. Responsible and respectful communication plays an essential role in building a peaceful and equitable society.
The online news media charter against hate speech was adopted by the Congolese Union of Media Women, the Congolese Association of Women Journalists of the Written Press, the Online Media Association of the DRC, the the National Press Union of Congo and the Superior Council of Audiovisual and Communication. This initiative marks an important step in promoting a healthy and respectful media environment in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It is essential to recognize the powerful role that the media play in society, as conduits of information and awareness. By working together, media and international organizations can help build a better world, free from hatred and violence.
