Kanyaruchinya camp: an alarming situation that requires urgent intervention
In the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, more precisely in the territory of Nyirangongo, is the Kanyaruchinya camp. This camp currently houses around 47,000 households, or tens of thousands of people who fled the violence perpetrated by the M23 rebels. Unfortunately, living conditions in this camp are precarious and residents face many challenges.
Access to food is insufficient, leading to widespread malnutrition among the population. In addition, hygienic conditions are deplorable, which favors the spread of contagious diseases such as measles and cholera. With 660 deaths already recorded, there is an urgent need to act to prevent a health catastrophe.
Faced with this alarming situation, a delegation from the National Fund for Reparations for Victims of Sexual Violence Related to Armed Conflicts and Crimes Against the Peace of Humanity (FONAREV) went to the site to assess the situation and consider solutions. Lucien Lundula Lolatui, Director General of FONAREV, expressed his concern and determination to help displaced people who live in inhumane conditions.
In addition to precarious living conditions, the presence of armed groups, including the M23 rebels supported by Rwanda, poses a constant threat to the population. This further complicates the situation and makes FONAREV’s intervention all the more necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the inhabitants of the Kanyaruchinya camp.
During this visit, the FONAREV delegation also met women leaders of women’s organizations in North Kivu, who are engaged in the fight against gender-based violence and the promotion of peace. This meeting made it possible to discuss urgent actions to be undertaken and to strengthen collaboration to improve the humanitarian situation in the region.
FONAREV is committed to supporting victims of sexual violence and armed conflict, and its visit to Kanyaruchinya reaffirmed its commitment to this important mission. Programs will be put in place to respond to the urgent needs of camp residents, particularly in terms of housing, care for children and women victims of violence.
It is essential to mobilize international assistance and work in partnership with local authorities to improve the living conditions of displaced people in the Kanyaruchinya camp and other similar camps in the region. The situation requires concerted and rapid action to ensure the safety, dignity and well-being of these vulnerable populations.
