Introduction :
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) continue to work together to promote peace, security and sustainable development in the region. During a recent meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Francophonie, Christophe Lutundula, spoke with João Samuel Caholo, executive secretary of the ICGLR. At the center of the discussions, the Regional Forum on artisanal and small-scale gold and the security situation in the Great Lakes region.

The Regional Forum on Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold:
Launched by the Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, the Regional Forum on artisanal and small-scale mining gold aims to implement the ICGLR strategy in this area. This forum, which is currently being held in Kinshasa, brings together representatives of ICGLR member countries and international experts. The aim is to promote responsible gold trading and combat illegal practices that fuel conflict and human exploitation.

The security situation in the Great Lakes region:
Beyond the question of gold, the discussions between Christophe Lutundula and João Samuel Caholo also addressed the security situation in the Great Lakes region. These cyclical conflicts, particularly in eastern DRC, continue to cause suffering and hinder development in the region. The ICGLR, aware of the importance of ending these conflicts, is committed to working closely with the DRC and other countries in the region to promote stability, peace and democracy.

The mobilization of the ICGLR for the elections in the DRC:
The elections scheduled for next December in the DRC are a major challenge for the political stability of the country. João Samuel Caholo reiterated the ICGLR’s commitment to supporting and mobilizing its members to ensure the smooth running of these elections. Democracy and the political participation of all actors are essential to consolidate peace and promote development in the DRC.
