“The DRC Leopards roar to victory and qualify for CAN 2023!”

The Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo roar with victory against the Crocodiles of the Nile on the last day of the qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations (CAN) of Côte d’Ivoire 2023. In an explosive match which took place at the Martyrs de la Pentecost stadium in Kinshasa, the Leopards won with a score of 2-0.

From the 8th minute of play, Charles Pickel found Théo Bongonda in the area to open the scoring with a flat right foot. An early goal which set the tone for the match. Despite a slight lethargy from the Congolese, the Nile Crocodiles narrowly missed the equalizer in the 34th minute. For their part, the Leopards also missed an opportunity to widen the gap in the 40th minute.

In the second period, Fiston Kalala Mayele, who came on as a substitute, made the break in the 87th minute, thus sealing the victory for the Leopards. This performance allows the DRC to finish at the top of the Group I ranking, despite a worrying start with two consecutive defeats against Gabon and Sudan.

This qualification for CAN 2023 is a great victory for the DRC and its Pair intends to be there for this long-awaited continental football competition. The Tshisekedi presidential couple was also present at the Martyrs stadium to support the Leopards. The public, who came in large numbers, also participated in their success by singing and encouraging the team throughout the match.

The final ranking of Group I confirms the domination of the DRC which finished first with 12 points, followed by Mauritania with 10 points. Gabon and Sudan find themselves in third and fourth place respectively.

This victory for the Leopards shows their determination and their ability to bounce back after a difficult start. It is also a reflection of the talent and perseverance of Congolese players. The DRC can now look forward to CAN 2023 with optimism, ready to defend its colors with pride on the continental scene.
