The new Constitutional Court building in the Democratic Republic of Congo is under construction, with funding from both the Congolese government and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This decision reflects the desire of the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, to provide this judicial institution with adequate work space to fulfill its mission as a constitutional judge.
The building, whose construction is expected to last 10 months, adopts a pyramidal architecture, inspired by the Nyiragongo volcano. According to the architect, this design aims to highlight the volcanic relief of the country and to underline the exceptional nature of the decisions taken by the Constitutional Court.
Located in the Royal district of the commune of Gombe, the new headquarters of the Constitutional Court will include a large courtroom, offices and other work spaces spread over 4 floors. This expansion will provide the Court with a conducive environment to carry out its judicial functions.
During the foundation stone laying ceremony, the President of the Constitutional Court, Dieudonné Kamuleta, expressed his gratitude to the President of the Republic for his support in the realization of this project. The Constitutional Court, resulting from the reform of the judicial power, exercises the power of constitutional judge and its decisions are irrevocable.
This construction marks an important turning point for the Constitutional Court of the Democratic Republic of Congo, providing it with modern infrastructure adapted to its needs. This reinforces its role as a key institution in the country’s justice system and underlines the Congolese government’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law and the protection of constitutional rights.
