Teachers in Kahemba in the DRC face non-payment of their salaries: a challenge for education

Teachers in the Kahemba area, members of the SYECO and SYNECAT unions, are facing a worrying situation. In a press statement on September 7, they denounced the non-payment of their salaries for July and August 2023. These payment delays were blamed by teachers who accuse the Equity BCDC bank of having blocked their salaries and the operating costs of their schools.

This situation jeopardizes the start of the school year and disrupts the proper functioning of schools. While the 2023-2024 school year began five days ago, teachers find themselves without the necessary funds to prepare for the start of the school year and ensure the smooth running of classes.

Wangwamba Ramazani, spokesperson for the Kahemba Teachers’ Union Synergy, asked the Equity BCDC bank to release their salaries and take measures from this first week of school. Teachers emphasize that these late payments not only affect their own financial situation, but also that of their families.

Contacted on this subject, a bank official, who preferred to remain anonymous, acknowledged this situation. He explained that the delay in receiving certain payroll elements, notably listings, was the cause of these blockages. However, he affirmed that the paying agent teams were on their way to Kahemba.

This situation raises concerns about the financial stability of teachers and the impact on students’ education. It is essential that authorities take steps to resolve this issue quickly to ensure a conducive learning environment and support teachers in their educational mission.

The situation of teachers in Kahemba territory is an alarming example of the difficulties faced by many teachers in the DRC. It is essential to recognize their crucial role in society and ensure that they receive the salaries and resources necessary to successfully fulfill their mission. This requires better coordination between education authorities and financial institutions to ensure regular payroll and effective management of funds allocated to education. Only in this way can we ensure a strong educational future for generations to come.
