Comet Nishimura: a light show not to be missed
A new arrival in the starry sky is currently arousing excitement and wonder among amateur astronomers and astronomy enthusiasts. This is comet Nishimura, discovered only a month ago by Japanese amateur astronomer Hideo Nishimura. This comet is currently heading towards the Sun and will reach its maximum brightness during the coming weekend. A rare opportunity to observe an impressive celestial spectacle with simple binoculars, or even with the naked eye, for the lucky ones.
Comet C/2023 P1, its scientific name, has a long-period orbit and its last passage near the Sun dates back 437 years. Which makes its discovery so close to its maximum brightness even more remarkable. Indeed, most comets are generally spotted months or even years in advance before they pass closest to our star.
Observing a comet is always a fascinating spectacle. As it approaches the Sun, the ice in the comet’s core sublimates, creating a dust trail that reflects the Sun’s light. It is this characteristic luminous hair that we can observe from Earth. Comet Nishimura will reach its closest point to the Sun on September 17, being approximately 33 million kilometers from our star. This is less than a quarter of the distance between Earth and the Sun, or about 125 million kilometers from Earth.
It is already possible to observe Comet Nishimura, but it is this weekend that it will be at its brightest, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. To fully enjoy this celestial spectacle, it is recommended to look at the sky before sunrise, around 6 a.m. in France, towards the northeast, to the left of Venus, also known as Venus. ‘Evening Star. A clear sky without light pollution is ideal for observation. Small binoculars will be enough to appreciate the spectacle, and in the best atmospheric conditions, some might even be able to observe it with the naked eye.
The trail from comet Nishimura has a greenish color, which is explained by the presence of more gas than dust. A feature that adds a unique touch to the brilliance of this comet.
Don’t miss the opportunity to contemplate this exceptional celestial spectacle offered by comet Nishimura. An experience that recalls the beauty and magic of our universe and which will captivate lovers of astronomy and cosmic wonders.
