Sinking of the M/V Madalanga off the coast of Kalemie: Traders demand urgent measures
Kalemie, a town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, was the scene of a tragic shipwreck ten days ago. The boat M/V Madalanga, coming from the port of Kigoma in Tanzania, sank off the town, leaving many traders in disarray. According to the Federation of Congo Enterprises (FEC) Tanganyika section, dozens of traders lost their goods during this incident. Among them, there are both Congolese and Tanzanians.
The M/V Madalanga, registered in Tanzania, was carrying nearly 100 tons of cargo and passengers. Fortunately, no deaths were reported. However, the material losses are considerable. Traders dispute the declarations of the maritime service of Kalemie, which affirms that the boat transported only 20 tons of goods. According to them, its capacity was much greater, as evidenced by the presence of a dozen cows on board, as well as goats, corn and rice.
The exact circumstances of the sinking remain unclear. Passenger testimonies indicate that the captain sought to dock near the port of Kalemie, despite the difficult weather conditions. According to Fec Tanganyika, the place indicated by the maritime service was not safe given the strong wind that was blowing that day. However, the maritime service rejects these accusations and evokes a technical failure of the engine of the boat combined with a rough storm.
Faced with this situation, Fec Tanganyika deplores the silence of the provincial authorities and requests that an investigation be carried out to determine responsibilities. Traders, on the other hand, hope to be compensated for their financial losses.
Cyprien Mfumu, transport minister of Tanganyika province, was contacted to comment on the situation. He promised to speak soon on this subject.
This shipwreck is once again a reminder of the challenges faced by navigators on Lake Tanganyika, which is often subject to unpredictable weather conditions. It also highlights the need to strengthen maritime security and ensure better regulation of river transport in the region. Hopefully this incident serves as a lesson and leads the authorities to take necessary measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
