The Congolese Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, recently participated in the first African Climate Summit (Africa Climate Summit 2023, ACS23) which took place in Nairobi, Kenya. Accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs, Christophe Lutundula, the Prime Minister represented the President of the Republic, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, during this leading event devoted to climate issues.
Upon his arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, the Prime Minister was warmly welcomed by the DRC Ambassador to Kenya, John Nyakeru Ilunga. He then signed the official guest book, a ceremonial tradition which testifies to his presence in the Kenyan capital.
This African Climate Summit offered a unique opportunity to Prime Minister Sama Lukonde to present the Democratic Republic of Congo as a “Solution Country” in the fight against climate change and energy transition. Indeed, the country has immense natural resources and exceptional biodiversity that can contribute to meeting the challenges of climate change, not only in Africa, but also throughout the world.
For three days, the participants in this Summit exchanged and debated around the main theme: “Promoting green growth and climate action financing solutions for Africa and the rest of the world”. The objective was to find solutions adapted to the urgent challenges posed by climate change on the African continent, while proposing a common voice during the next Conference of the Parties (COP28) to be held in Dubai.
During this meeting, Prime Minister Sama Lukonde was able to express the DRC’s position and share the country’s initiatives and commitments in terms of the fight against climate change. He stressed the importance of international cooperation and the mobilization of financial resources to support ecological transition and sustainable development efforts in Africa.
This African Climate Summit took place in parallel with the 2023 African Climate Week, also organized in Nairobi. This major event highlighted innovative green growth and climate finance solutions for Africa and the world.
Africa, despite its natural wealth, remains the continent most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. African countries face challenges such as droughts, floods and natural disasters, which require collective action and tailored solutions.
By actively participating in this African Climate Summit, the Democratic Republic of Congo has demonstrated its commitment to the protection of the environment, the fight against climate change and the promotion of sustainable development on the African continent.. The leadership of Prime Minister Sama Lukonde during this event underlines the importance given by the Congolese government to these crucial issues for the future of the planet.
Beyond this Summit, it is essential to continue efforts and put in place concrete policies and actions to preserve our environment and guarantee a sustainable future for generations to come. The mobilization of all, both individually and collectively, is essential to meet the challenges of climate change and build a better future for all.
