“Internet and social networks: how to put an end to the culture of online insults?”

Social networks and the internet have profoundly transformed the way we communicate and interact with each other. In the past, our exchanges were limited to our private circle, to our close entourage and our discussions generally remained discreet and confidential. But with the advent of digital and the explosion of the internet, all these barriers have disappeared. From now on, our opinions and our debates find themselves exposed publicly, accessible to all, and sometimes, this can take an unpleasant turn.

On the internet, we are all actors, commentators, givers of opinions. Everyone can express their thoughts, give their opinion on any subject, without thinking too much about the consequences. Freedom of expression has become a reality, but unfortunately this has also led to an often very low level of debate. Social networks have become the playground of those who can’t stand being contradicted, who express their ideas in an aggressive, sometimes even insulting way.

There are those who proudly display their identity, who are not afraid to shame their parents, their upbringing. They persist in their disrespectful behavior, encouraged by a horde of “followers” who blindly support them. And then there are the anonymous, the rude online, those who hide behind a pseudonym to pour out their hate and contempt.

What is striking is how these attacks are often accompanied by deplorable writing, riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. The ideas expressed are often just as horrific as the way they are written. And the worst part is that all of this stays on the internet, forever. Nothing really fades on the web.

It’s time to raise awareness, to put an end to this culture of insult on the internet. We all need to take responsibility and act thoughtfully and respectfully. Social networks are not a private room, it is a public space where our words have an impact, where they can hurt, humiliate. We need to be aware of this and learn to communicate constructively and respectfully.

Dear Congolese compatriots, let’s stop insulting ourselves on the web. Let’s not all bare ourselves, let’s not give a demeaning image of ourselves. Let’s use the internet to discuss, to inform ourselves, to share constructive ideas. Show respect and empathy for others, even when our opinions differ.

Together, we can create a healthier space online, where the debate of ideas takes precedence over insults and personal attacks. Let’s take back control of our exchanges on the internet and show the world that we are able to dialogue in a respectful and intelligent way.
