Afro/African cultural events not to be missed in September

The month of September is rich in cultural events highlighting Afro / African culture around the world. Whether in the fields of photography, cinema, contemporary art or music, many appointments are to be expected. Here is a list of 21 events not to be missed this month.

Visa pour l’Image – From September 2 to 17, the Visa pour l’Image festival, which takes place in Perpignan, is an unmissable event for photojournalism. Many photographers have explored the African continent and will present their work during this event.

Mostra de Cinemas Africanos – From September 5 to 18, in Rio de Janeiro, this film festival highlights short and feature films of contemporary African cinematography. The objective is to introduce Brazilian audiences to the aesthetics and stories of African cinema produced in Africa and its diaspora.

Parcours des mondes – From September 5 to 10, in Paris, the Parcours des mondes will be held, the largest international fair for non-European and Asian arts. About fifty galleries will be present, highlighting the arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas.

Amadou Sanogo exhibition – From September 7 to October 7, the Malian painter Amadou Sanogo will exhibit his new works at the Parisian gallery Magnin-A. Entitled “Yebali Lakali” (Telling the invisible), this exhibition will address universal questions through metaphorical stories.

Mariam Abouzid Souali exhibition – From September 7, the Parisian gallery of Cécile Fakhoury will welcome the Moroccan painter Mariam Abouzid Souali. His exhibition entitled “Stardust: we are stardust” questions the place of the individual in globalization.

International Festival of Films from the African Diaspora (FIFDA Paris 2023) – From September 8 to 10, this festival will offer its thirteenth edition in three cinemas in Paris. Eleven new films from ten countries will be screened, exploring the history of Africa and its diaspora.

Armory Show – From September 8 to 10, the Armory Show in New York will bring together the greatest international galleries of contemporary and modern art. African artists Mariano Mercier, Kwesi Botchway, Johnson Eziefula, Omar Ba and Alioune Diagne will be honoured.

Praemium Imperiale – On September 12, the 2023 winners of the Praemium Imperiale, the “Nobel” of the arts, will be revealed. Perhaps an African artist will be honored this year, succeeding the previous winners from Ghana, Senegal and South Africa.

Afroglitch exhibition – From September 14, the Parisian gallery Christophe Person will host the “Afroglitch” exhibition. This exhibition explores the concept of “Glitch”, an English term meaning “slippery zone”, through Afro / African artists.
