“Communal elections in the DRC: extension of candidacies and postponement in certain areas for a more inclusive electoral process”

Election of municipal councilors in the DRC: extension of the submission of candidacies and postponement in certain territorial entities

The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to take steps to ensure fairness and inclusiveness in the upcoming electoral process.

In a recent press release, the CENI announced the extension of the period for submitting nominations for provincial deputy. This decision aims to allow all political actors to participate fairly in the planned elections.

In addition, the election of municipal councilors has also been postponed in certain territorial entities. According to correspondence from the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, Security and Customary Affairs, issues related to customary power and administrative demarcation have been identified. In order to resolve these conflicts, the CENI decided to postpone the election of communal councilors in these areas.

In this context, the CENI reassures independent candidates and political parties who have already paid their deposit for the municipalities not concerned. Their participation will be taken into account when organizing the election of municipal councilors at a later date, according to a revised calendar which will be published shortly.

These measures bear witness to the efforts of the CENI to ensure a transparent and inclusive electoral process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. By extending the nomination period and postponing the election in some areas, the commission is ensuring that all political actors have the opportunity to participate in a fair and democratic manner.

It is essential to emphasize that these measures contribute to strengthening the confidence of stakeholders in the electoral process and to promoting political stability and respect for democratic rights in the DRC. Transparency and inclusiveness are fundamental pillars of any democracy, and the CENI is working to put them into practice in the context of the upcoming elections.

In conclusion, the extension of the filing of candidacies and the postponement of the election of municipal councilors in certain areas demonstrate the commitment of the CENI to a fair and transparent electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These measures are essential to consolidate democracy and ensure the participation of all political actors in building the country’s future
