The gradual disappearance of certain species of fish in the Kasai River is a matter of concern that has attracted the attention of the head of the provincial division of Fisheries and Livestock in Kwilu, Romain Gudula. Indeed, according to him, this situation is the result of an “abusive” fishery which does not respect the regulations in force.
The main causes of this alarming situation are the use of small-mesh nets and long-lasting impregnated mosquito nets (LLINs) by the majority of fishermen. In addition, non-compliance with the fishing closure period and the invasion of spawning areas by the population also contribute to the decrease in fish populations.
Faced with this problem, Romain Gudula Buna calls on the competent authorities to provide fishing and farming services with floating equipment such as speedboats. This equipment would make it possible to strengthen surveillance and control activities to track down fishermen who break the law on fishing. This measure aims to restore the fish richness of the Kasaï River and to classify it among the most fish-rich rivers in the province.
It is essential to take measures to preserve fish species and ensure the sustainability of fishing in the Kasai River. Collaboration between authorities, fishermen and local communities is necessary to implement sustainable and environmentally friendly fishing practices. It is also important to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving aquatic resources and enforcing fishing regulations.
In conclusion, it is urgent to act to prevent the disappearance of fish species in the Kasai River. Control and surveillance measures, as well as raising the awareness of the actors involved, are essential to preserve aquatic biodiversity and ensure the sustainability of fish resources
