The article that I have the honor to present to you today addresses a major topical subject: the meeting between President Félix Tshisekedi and the head of Monusco, Bintou Keita, which took place in Kinshasa on 26 August 2023.
The objective of this meeting was to discuss topics related to the partnership between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC (Monusco). According to Bintou Keita, the focus was on the security situation in the east of the country, highlighting the dynamics linked to the armed group M23. The situation in Grand Nord-Kivu and in Ituri was also mentioned, testifying to the importance attached to the resolution of conflicts in these regions particularly affected by violence.
In addition to these points, the exchanges between the two leaders also focused on the Regional Force of the East African Community (EAC) and the future deployment of the Mission of the Southern African Development Community (SADC ). These regional bodies play a crucial role in the consolidation of peace and security in the DRC, and their involvement has been discussed within the framework of the partnership between the DRC and MONUSCO.
Finally, the question of the organization of the departure of Monusco was also addressed. This is an important step in the process of transitioning to greater DRC responsibility for security and stability. This discussion underlines President Tshisekedi’s commitment to the autonomy of his country in the management of its own destiny.
Separately, it should be mentioned that the Ministers of Defense of seven EAC member countries also held a meeting in Nairobi, during which they decided to maintain the EAC regional force in the DRC beyond of the expiry date of his term. This decision bears witness to the willingness of neighboring countries to support the DRC in its efforts to stabilize and consolidate peace.
