“Uncertainty hangs over the start of the school year in the Masisi region: insecurity and poverty threaten children’s education”

The start of the 2023-2024 school year in the Masisi region (North Kivu) remains uncertain due to persistent insecurity, according to a local civil society actor. The situation is worrying because many population displacements have taken place and the schools are occupied by displaced people who have no shelter.

In addition to insecurity, other factors contribute to making this return to school hypothetical. The poverty of the population is a major problem, with parents who cannot afford to send their children to school.

“Now, we must note the lack of places in schools. We must look at the extreme poverty of parents who do not have the means…”, explains Telephone Mitondeke, a civil society actor.

The President of the Territorial Youth Council, Lwamba Mufuni, also agrees. It highlights the challenges faced by children living in IDP camps in Bulengo.

The situation raises concerns and calls for action. Some actors suggest that the government put in place appropriate strategies to support the most vulnerable children.

Unfortunately, education officials in Masisi territory have said little about the issue.

It is therefore essential to find solutions quickly in order to guarantee access to education for all children in the region. Back to school is a crucial moment for their development and their future, and it is important not to deprive them of this opportunity due to insecurity and poverty.

It is also necessary to raise awareness about this situation and mobilize the necessary resources to support displaced children and their families in their access to education.

Overall, it is essential not to neglect education in times of crisis. It remains a fundamental right for all children, regardless of their geographical and socio-economic situation. It is therefore essential to work together to guarantee a successful and productive return to school in the Masisi region
