Strengthening security for peaceful end-of-year celebrations in Beni

There is no denying that the approach of the end-of-year holidays arouses both excitement and vigilance in many parts of the world, and the city of Beni in North Kivu is no exception. As preparations for celebrating Christmas and the New Year are in full swing, Senior Superintendent Jacob Nyofondo recently issued a call for vigilance to the local population, stressing the need to strengthen security measures to ensure the safety of all.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, December 24, Mayor Nyofondo urged those responsible for public places such as churches, supermarkets, restaurants, bars and gas stations to take proactive measures to enhance the security of their worshipers and customers. Recommendations include the installation of surveillance cameras and the use of metal detectors to deter suspicious individuals.

Furthermore, Commissioner Nyofondo called for vigilance from all citizens and encouraged them to report any suspicious behavior or unusual movement in order to preserve public tranquility. He also warned that any attempt to disrupt public order would be firmly repressed, with the police fully mobilized to ensure the safety of the population.

The Beni region has unfortunately been the scene of violent attacks in the past, perpetrated by the ADF rebels. Public places have been targeted, resulting in considerable human and material losses. The tragic events that occurred in previous years, particularly in 2021 and 2023, have left deep scars in the local community.

Given this history of insecurity, it is essential that local authorities and the population work closely together to strengthen security and prevent any form of violence during the end-of-year festivities. The vigilance and solidarity of all are essential pillars to ensure peaceful and secure celebrations, in a spirit of sharing and conviviality.

In these times of jubilation and gathering, let us remember that the safety of each person is everyone’s business. Let us be attentive, united and determined to make these celebrations a moment of joy and peace for all the inhabitants of Beni and beyond.
