In an already fragile climate marked by geopolitical tensions, the systematic looting of the equipment of the Buleusa community radio station in the Walikale territory of North Kivu has dealt a severe blow to freedom of information and democracy. The National Union of the Congolese Press, North Kivu section, strongly condemned this act of violence which threatens the fundamental right of local populations to be informed, as guaranteed by the Constitution.
The indignation of the National Union of the Congolese Press is legitimate in the face of such an attack on freedom of the press and the right of citizens to access impartial and reliable information. Indeed, the Buleusa community radio station plays a crucial role in disseminating information within the local community, by promoting the sharing of knowledge, awareness-raising and the debate of ideas. Its looting jeopardizes this essential mission and weakens the social fabric already strained by armed conflicts and political tensions.
This act of violence reveals unacceptable cruelty, which shows how freedom of expression and freedom of the press are constantly under threat in unstable and conflict-ridden environments. By depriving local populations of their main source of information, the perpetrators of this pillage seek to keep them in the dark and deprive them of their ability to form an informed opinion on events that directly concern them.
It is regrettable that the identity of the perpetrators of this heinous act is not yet known, but it is imperative that full light be shed on this case so that justice can be done and those responsible can be held accountable for their actions. At the same time, it is essential that concrete measures be taken to protect the media and journalists who work every day to inform the population, despite the risks and pressures they face.
In a context where freedom of expression is constantly under threat, it is everyone’s duty to defend democratic principles and promote respect for fundamental rights, including the right to information. The looting of Buleusa Community Radio is a stark reminder of the fragility of these rights, and it is incumbent on all of us to mobilize to protect press freedom and ensure access to free and objective information for all.
