Alarming increase in cases of conflict-related sexual violations in the Democratic Republic of Congo

This November was marked by a worrying increase in cases of conflict-related sexual violations in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the latest report from the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office, armed groups were responsible for 69% of the 26 incidents recorded, affecting 41 adult victims. This statistic represents a 7% increase compared to the previous month, when 13 incidents were reported, affecting 48 victims.

The figures are alarming, revealing persistent and devastating violence carried out by these armed groups on vulnerable populations. The M23 stands out as having committed the highest number of violations, with 11 victims to its name. It is followed by the FRPI, CODECO, the ADF, as well as other factions such as the Mai-Mai group of the National Coalition for Congolese Sovereignty (CNPSC) and the Kabala faction. Each of these groups has caused deep suffering and trauma to victims who only asked to live in peace.

This series of figures reflects a brutal and unbearable reality for the local populations who suffer these atrocities on a daily basis. The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) are also not spared, being attributed to 30% of the victims recorded. It is essential that concrete and effective measures be taken to put an end to these abuses, protect the populations and bring those responsible to justice.

It is essential to raise public awareness of this alarming situation and to mobilize national and international authorities to put an end to this unbearable violence. The victims of these crimes deserve to be heard, supported and remedied in their dignity and integrity. It is the duty of all of us to condemn these barbaric acts and to fight together for a future where peace and security prevail over violence and terror.

Together, we can and must act to end these heinous sexual violations and ensure a safer and more just future for all. Now is the time to raise our voices and mobilize collectively for a world where human rights are respected and protected in all circumstances.
