Tragedy struck Nigeria during the Christmas festivities, with scenes of chaos and despair claiming the lives of 32 people at two separate charity events. The events, meant to bring relief to the poor during the festive season, unfortunately turned into a nightmare, leaving a heavy toll of lives lost.
One such tragedy took place in Okija, Anambra State, where a philanthropist had organised a food distribution. Twenty-two people lost their lives at the event, turning the festive gathering into a deadly stampede. In Abuja, the country’s capital, ten more people died at a similar ceremony organised by a local church.
Survivors’ accounts reveal a terrifying picture of panic and confusion. “They opened the doors this morning, everyone rushed in, then some people fell down, and they started walking on people. They walked on them until they died,” said an eyewitness, describing the horror of the scene.
Nigerian authorities have responded by promising to investigate the tragic incidents, which come just days after dozens of children were killed in another incident at a funfair in Ibadan. This series of unfortunate events underscores the urgent need to put in place strict security measures during these charity events and ensure that citizens’ lives are protected.
