At the heart of peacebuilding challenges in the Democratic Republic of Congo is the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), a key player in the quest for stability and sustainable development. Recently, a comprehensive evaluation of the PBF’s investment portfolio in the DRC was conducted, highlighting significant progress but also persistent challenges.
Since 2018, the PBF has invested US$49 million in various projects in the DRC, with a particular focus on interventions in conflict-affected provinces such as Kasai, Tanganyika and South Kivu. These projects were designed to promote inclusive local governance, the reintegration of ex-combatants, durable solutions for displaced people and social cohesion.
The evaluation findings highlighted the positive impact of these initiatives on the ground, but also pointed to persistent obstacles, such as the resurgence of conflict in some provinces and infrastructure challenges. This situation underlines the importance of increasing the financial and human resources of the PBF in the DRC to strengthen its effectiveness and impact at the national level.
The actors involved in this evaluation unanimously recognized the need to direct future investments of the PBF towards key areas such as strengthening governance, the resilience of vulnerable communities, the protection of civilians and the promotion of human rights. These strategic axes are essential to consolidate the gains made and meet future challenges related to the post-MONUSCO transition and transitional justice.
With this in mind, it is essential to adopt a holistic and integrated approach to consolidate peace in the DRC, by promoting transparent and inclusive governance, strengthening the resilience of vulnerable populations and ensuring the protection of human rights. This long-term work requires a sustained commitment from the international community and the Congolese authorities to build a peaceful and prosperous future for all citizens of the country.
In conclusion, the evaluation of the PBF portfolio in the DRC highlights both successes and persistent challenges in peacebuilding. Drawing lessons from past experiences, it is imperative to invest in sustainable and inclusive initiatives that will positively transform the reality of the Congolese populations and build a more stable and prosperous future for all.
