Strengthening MONUSCO peacekeepers in Ituri: an imperative for stability and security
The security situation in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo, remains worrying due to violence perpetrated by various armed groups. The Governor of Ituri, General Johny Luboya Nkashama, recently called for the strengthening of MONUSCO contingents in the region to effectively address the security problem, particularly in Djugu territory.
The Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Vivian De Perre, spoke at a meeting in Bunia about the need for close collaboration between provincial authorities and the UN mission to address security challenges. Dialogue, logistical support and the engagement of peacekeepers are key elements to improve the situation in the region, under the leadership of the Governor.
Faced with the resurgence of violence in the Djugu territory, General Luboya Nkashama stressed the importance of strengthening MONUSCO’s military personnel in the area. He expressed the need for an increased presence of peacekeepers to prevent violence and ensure the protection of populations, particularly displaced persons, who are regularly threatened by armed groups.
The request from the Governor of Ituri highlights the urgent need to act to ensure security and stability in the region. The deployment of additional forces, in collaboration with MONUSCO, is essential to strengthen protection capacities and respond to the persistent security challenges.
In conclusion, strengthening the number of MONUSCO peacekeepers in Ituri is an essential measure to consolidate peace, protect civilians and promote sustainable development in the province. It is up to the local authorities, MONUSCO and the international community to cooperate closely to establish a climate of security and trust conducive to the reconstruction and socio-economic development of the region.
