How to better organize the services of the fire brigades in the DRC?
The recent increase in cases of fires in several provinces of the DRC has highlighted the need for better organization of fire brigade services. Indeed, these fires caused significant material damage and sometimes cost human lives. It is therefore urgent to rethink and strengthen prevention and response measures in the event of fire.
In a recent discussion on the subject, Ciza Cishugu Moïse, in charge of public relations for the national body of firefighters and a citizen victim of the fires in Bukavu, underlined the ineffectiveness of current relief interventions. He insisted on the need to strengthen the capacities of firefighters, in terms of training, equipment and coordination of actions on the ground.
In this respect, the expert in the organization of fire services, Ir John Kabwidi Bwidi, suggested several areas for improvement. He suggested setting up an effective communication system between the various fire brigades, in order to ensure optimal coordination during interventions. In addition, he stressed the importance of raising public awareness of preventive actions and procedures to follow in the event of a fire, in order to reduce risks and facilitate emergency response.
In terms of human resources, Ir John Kabwidi Bwidi also stressed the need to increase the number of fire brigades. Attracting new candidates and providing adequate training is paramount to ensuring competent and well-prepared staff. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of collaboration with other actors, such as insurance companies, municipalities and international organizations, to strengthen the capacities of fire services.
Finally, the expert stressed the importance of investing in the acquisition of modern materials and equipment. Adapted intervention vehicles, quality personal protective equipment and specialized tools are essential to carry out efficient and secure operations.
In conclusion, to better organize the services of the fire brigades in the DRC, it is essential to strengthen the capacities of the firefighters, to improve the coordination of actions, to raise awareness among the population and to invest in adequate equipment. These measures will reduce the risk of fire, limit damage and save lives
